Here is the first page of Hilaire Belloc’s The Servile State, published in October 1912. Anyone who wants to understand the trajectory of modern economic and political history has to start with this book.
I remember discovering it in college while studying Kant and Hegel, and after reading the first few pages, felt like someone had finally turned the lights on (or removed blinders, whatever).
35 or more years ago, when I was in college, I don’t think there were a dozen people in the world familiar with this book. Happily, that is not the case anymore. There are probably more people reading it today than ever in the past.
